What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring material composed of very strong fibres. Asbestos containing materials can be divided into two main groups. Bonded or non-friable asbestos (roof or wall sheeting) and un-bonded or friable asbestos (sprayed acoustic wall insulation or pipe lagging). Asbestos is generally found in buildings built before 2003.
When does asbestos become dangerous?
Typically asbestos does not pose a significant health risk if the fibres within are not allowed to become airborne. The dangers of asbestos become relevant when the asbestos sheets are being removed in the incorrect manner by breaking it into small pieces thus releasing fibres into the air which are able to be inhaled into the lungs.
